Former Economy Minister Returns Country to Socialist Rule

Arce's victory marks a return to socialist governance after 14 years of conservative rule.

LA PAZ, Bolivia - Bolivian politician and economist Luis Arce has been elected president of the Plurinational State of Bolivia, returning the country to socialist rule after 14 years of conservative governance.

Arce, who served as Minister of Economy and Public Finance under former President Evo Morales, won the election with 55% of the vote, according to official results released Sunday. His closest rival, former President Carlos Mesa, received 28% of the vote.

Arce's victory is a significant shift in Bolivian politics, as the country has been governed by conservative leaders since Morales was overthrown in a coup in 2019. Arce has promised to implement a number of socialist policies, including nationalizing key industries and expanding social programs.
